One of the original members of the American Football League, the Boston Patriots formed in 1959. When the American Football League (AFL) and the National Football League (NFL) merged in 1970, the Boston Patriots were placed in the AFC division, which is one of 4 divisions in the NFL.

After playing in 5 other stadiums, over their career as a team, the Boston Patriots moved to Foxboro Stadium in Massachusettes and played there for 30 years; from 1971 to 2001. Rejected by the National Football League in March of 1971, the Boston Patriots petitioned to change their name to Bay State Patriots. They then decided to call themselves the New England Patriots, and they were located in the greater Boston area. In 2002, when Foxboro Stadium began to deteriorate, they moved for the final time to Gillette Stadium, which is a $350 million dollar facility that Mr. raft fully financed himself. This is where they continue to play all home games and where the Patriots headquarters are located.

Located 21 miles southwest of downtown Boston and 20 miles Northeast of Providence, Rhode Island, the New England Patriots are one of the most successful franchises in the NFL. This has been the case since hiring head coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady.

Since forming in 1959 they have gone through a few head coaches and three owners. In 1994 Mr. Robert Kraft purchased the franchise for a whopping 175 million dollars. Since the buyout/take over by Kraft all of the New England Patriots home games have been sold out at both the Foxboro and Gillette Stadiums.
